NAPEP logoThe National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) has embarked on targeting extreme poor households which have been registered under its Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme known as In Care of the People or COPE for the launch of the programme this year.

The targeting conducted in each of the 12 benefiting states in the six geopolitical zones comprise 50 benefiting households from each of the six wards in the three selected local government areas of the states.

The CCT programme, according to a release signed by the Head Publicity, NAPEP, Danladi Hasssan Kobi, is one of the intervention programmes carried out by NAPEP, targeted at breaking inter generational transfer of  poverty in Nigeria while linking them to the economic process of the country.

They include households of the poor female-headed households, poor aged headed households, physically challenged persons headed households, households headed by special groups (victims of VVF, PLWHAs etc), all with children of basic school age.

He said with the launch of the programme this year, COPE has now been implemented in all the thirty six states of the federation and the FCT.

“The condition attached to the CCT is that the benefiting households will keep their children in school as well as access free basic health care while receiving a monthly stipend of N5,000.

“Most of those captured for the exercise were widows who were left with children to fend for as a result they were forced to engage their wards in economic activities for survival rather than allow them attend classes. In some cases the children are so small to undertake such menial jobs so they roam the streets begging motorist. Among those who spoke were traditional and youth leaders.

“The capturing session across the six geopolitical zones involved thumb print, pictures, and identification exercises. The beneficiaries interviewed were full of praises to NAPEP and government of President Goodluck Jonathan for his concern on their plight,” he said.
