PIC.8.FROM LEFT: DEPUTY CUSTOMS PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER, MR ATTAH JOSEPH; DEPUTY COMPTROLLER IN CHARGE OF CUSTOMS ANTI SMUGGLING TASK FORCE, SHALLANGWA HASSAN AND OFFICER IN CHARGE OF FEDERAL OCEAN TERMINAL GATE, ONNE SEAPORT, GUMMI HAMZA DURING THE CUSTOMS ANTI SMUGGLING TASK FORCE VISIT TO THE PORT IN RIVERS ON THURSDAY (14/03/13).The Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’, of  the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Tuesday announced the commencement of aggressive patrol to check smuggling along the nation’s borders and ports in the South West.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the command, Comptroller Mahmoud Nuhu, made the announcement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Nuhu said that the patrols were in line with the six point agenda of the Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Dikko Abdullahi.

“This is also being done to support the effort of other customs command in ensuring maximum revenue generation.

“It is pertinent to note that the presence of our operatives along some of the major flanks have transcended into monumental revenue gain for the customs command in the zone,” Nuhu said.

The controller also said that the unit had re-strategised its operational modalities for 2014 to justify the confidence the customs management reposed on the zone.

“We have put all necessary measures in place for effective synergy with critical stakeholders including the host communities where we operate.

“Customs had also collaborated with the relevant security agencies for the actualisation of the operational objectives,” he said.

Nuhu also said that the aggressive patrol of the south west zone, led to the seizure of 3,997, cartons of suspected fake pharmaceutical drugs and six drums of fake multivitamins in January.

He said that the alleged fake drugs and multivitamins were valued at N5.85 million with a duty paid value of N7.02 million.

The controller commended Nigerians, who had supported the customs on intelligence information on their campaign against smuggling.

“We must avoid act or conduct that will have effect on our economy as the NCS is fully determined to aggressively tackle this hydra-headed monster called smuggling to its logical conclusion.

“I must warn all those who engage in the unpatriotic act of the smuggling to desist forthwith as the unit is even more propelled to deal ruthlessly with these enemies of our country,“ Nuhu said. (NAN)
