Following persistent appeal from the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) for the extension of SIM registration, NCC finally gave its nod for the registration of deactivated SIMs.
NCC had directed telecoms operators to end SIM card registration on June 30, 2013, with a further directive to operators to commence deactivation of unregistered SIMs on their networks.
Director, Public Affairs at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Mr. Tony Ojobo, who conveyed NCC’s decision to the operators, had earlier told THISDAY that NCC would not extend SIM card registration exercise and that any subscriber whose SIM had been deactivated, would not have the opportunity to register it anymore.
But a recent statement from NATCOM’s, claimed that NCC has rescinded its decision and has allowed operators to register SIMs that where hitherto deactivated.
Although Ojobo could not be reached on phone to confirm the statement, THISDAY checks shows that subscribers that were initially disconnected have started visiting customer centres of telecoms operators for registration of deactivated SIMs.
Part of the statement released by President of NATCOMS, Mr. Deolu Ogunbanjo, read: In furtherance to the closure of SIM Card Registration on June 30, 2013; the appeals of National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) and Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Ministry of Communications Technology, NCC has opened a SIM card registration window for subscribers affected by deactivation /disconnection.
“The NCC window for the registration of deactivated / disconnected SIM cards is now the only opportunity for subscribers all over Nigeria to have their deactivated / disconnected SIM cards registered for re-activation / re-connection.
Deolu advised all subscribers that had their SIM cards deactivated, to go to the nearest customer care centre of their SIM network operator for registration and subsequent re-activation /re-connection.
“Already, service providers are encouraging deactivated / disconnected subscribers to come and register their SIM cards and get between N5,000 and N10,000 Re-Activation /Re-connection bonus for on-net calls.”
