GOV. YERO PRESENTS 2014 BUDGET IN KADUNA

The Speaker, Kaduna State House of Assembly, Mr Shehu Tahir, on Friday stated that the assembly would soon pass the bill to harmonise all tax laws in the state.

He said that the proposed law, when enacted, would enhance revenue generation and utilisation, particularly by local government councils in the state.

Tahir disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said that he was in the federal capital to attend at a retreat on the tax bill organised for members of the Assembly by Growth and Empowerment in States (GEMS3), a programme funded by Department of International Development.

He said that the retreat afforded the lawmakers the opportunity to assess issues on revenue generation in the state and the judicious use of such revenue.

“We looked at the issue of double taxation and we agreed that the bill before the assembly on collection and remittance of taxes would be passed to regularise all processes.

“Currently, the bill is still with the Ministry of Local Government, and as soon as it reaches the assembly, we will swing into action to make sure that it is passed without delay,” he said.

Tahir disclosed that tax administration in Kaduna state was cumbersome, but said that the assembly was working with GEMS to address the issues.

He expressed confidence that if the bill was passed, the harmonized tax law would address the problem of revenue collection and administration in the state.

“The assembly is currently working with GEMS3 to achieve the desired result because they have been discussing with the house on how the revenue collection in the state can be enhanced.

“I have to admit that presently the tax system in Kaduna state is nothing to write home about and that is why we are here to look at what the issues are.

“Definitely, change will come when this law is eventually in place and the state will come up with better collection and management of its revenue,” he stated. (NAN)
